The lean-to is a classic conservatory design which is perfect for both period and contemporary styles. This lean-to is a lovely addition to a Victorian property in Surrey. Whilst this is a simple lean-to, the extra height framework, which includes crucifix glazing bars in the clerestories, and a steepish pitch to the roof, make this a very special building.
Design hint - A lean-to style feels more spacious with a roof pitch of 30 degrees or more, but remember this will require upstairs windows to be at least 3.5m from ground level. A lean-to can be a classical design with ogee moulded guttering, pilaster corner posts and ovolo mouldings to the roof beams. It can also be a contemporary minimalist structure with no mouldings, large windows and finished in a cool satin grey. Consider a full length set of bi-folding doors to open the whole length of the conservatory to the garden - perfect for summer entertaining (with options for a rain-proof retreat!)
Here is another beautiful example. This is an addition to a listed cottage in the heart of Sussex. The conservatory has a large opening through to the lounge, thus transforming a small gloomy room into a light and spacious living area.
